new Outlander locations book

The latest book to cash in on the apparently never-ending success of TV fantasy-history drama Outlander is all about locations – and Falkirk plays an important part.

Outlander news from Private Outlander tours .

Written by authoress Phoebe Taplin, it’s on general release from Thursday, and promises to take the dedicated Outlander fan on a journey packed with trivia facts from the series. Falkirk’s Callendar House and Blackness Castle are among the local highlights, and we’re told the book is beautifully illustrated with photographs from the series. One high profile advance review of the book is enthusiastic about the book, but stresses it’s aimed squarely at the fan market – mainstream readers probably won’t get some of the references. is Outlander star Sam Heughan about to bring out his own whisky ?

Sam Heughan has been teasing a number of announcements as of late, and one of them included the development of his own whisky. He teased it briefly in an interview this week on This Morning, and earlier today he released a little more news in the form of a name: Great Glen Company.

Outlander news from Private Outlander tours

In the post below via his official Twitter, you can see the announcement of the name alongside the notice that “Great Glen is Coming.” The development of a whisky brand is certainly not something that happens overnight, so obviously this has been planned out for a while. Also, what better time to make said announcement than World Whisky Day? It’s a great way to get some attention out there on the brand before the launch, whenever that may be.

With a name like Great Glen, it’s pretty clear that the brand is meant to be a celebration of Scotland. The Great Glen is a famous rift valley / fault line that runs through much of Scotland, and there is also a famous pathway entitled the Great Glen Way that goes along with it. Developing a whisky that reflects Scotland is clearly important, and this also helps to tie it in more with Outlander and the show’s devoted fans. Without ever mentioning or even referencing the show, the idea invokes a similar reaction. After all, Outlander fans would be a key marketing base for the product.

Heughan is not the first television star to be involved in a line of specialty beverages / spirits. Here in North America Arrow star Stephen Amell is heavily involved in Nocking Point, which is primarily a winery but also markets a number of other products. Doing this sort of thing is a way to further expand your business portfolio, while also exploring something else you have a passion for. Sam’s love of whisky is pretty well-documented at this point so this feels like the perfect endeavor for him to take on. The thing that continues to impress us is how he can juggle this with the show, charity work, and other ventures — it’s the end result of having focus and a good team around you.

Outlander star Sam Heughan has headed for the hills in his latest TV appearance.

He explains his love of the great outdoors to Cameron McNeish for Take a Hike on BBC Two Scotland.

The actor, who grew up in Dumfries and Galloway, said it was a passion which had been with him as long as he could remember.

He said that returning to Scotland to film Outlander had rekindled his desire to enjoy its countryside.

“I was born and raised in a place called New Galloway, on the grounds of a derelict castle,” he said.

“It was a great childhood.

“I know I am very fortunate but I got to be outdoors all the time with my imagination and play a lot out there – I think that’s probably where my love of acting came from.

“The whole area was kind of my play park where there were really no boundaries and I think that discovery and excitement as a kid definitely has transferred into why I like coming to remote places.”

The return to his homeland for his acting career took him back to those memories.

New Galloway lies on the west side of the valley of the Water of Ken a mile north of the end of Loch Ken in Dumfries and Galloway.

It is largely built around a single north-south High Street that climbs up through town and has a location on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park that gives it a “wonderful air of seclusion”.

The town as seen today dates back to planned development by Viscount Kenmure in the early 1600s, followed by the granting of burgh status in 1630.

But settlement in the area goes back much further with nearby Kenmure Castle fought over in the late 1200s.

“I moved back to Scotland to shoot Outlander and go to all these amazing locations all over Scotland and it made me fall in love with the country that I knew from my childhood,” he said.

His first climbing experience as an adult was not such a success when he slipped and fell on Ben Lomond.

However, he said that was part of the excitement for him

“I think the challenge of climbing is certainly a part of why I do it,” he said.

“It’s like you’re an adventurer, you’re maybe the first person to ever be here and that’s what I love about the mountains.

“You can get to them quite easily and before you know it you feel like you’re the first man to ever climb here.

“To me, it’s something inside you, something inside your bones, it’s a real connection to the land.”

Outlander filming location for the standing stones

While Craig na Dun may be a figment of Diana Gabaldon’s imagination, it’s certainly based on a real location. Here’s a look at the Outlander filming location for the standing stones

Diana Gabaldon may have used plenty of real history in the “Outlander” series, but certain locations are just figments of her imagination. They’re beautiful figments, but it meant when the books were turned into a TV series real locations needed to be found. The standing stones of Craig na Dun is just one of those locations.

While you can’t see the stones Gabaldon has created, you can visit the filming location. Here’s all you need to know about the real standing stones.

There are many standing stones around Scotland. When the settlers first arrived, they erected monuments like the standing stones but nobody really understands why. While there are theories, nothing is certain as nobody left any messages to tell us.

Clava Cairns is just one of the locations in Scotland, located just a five-minute drive from Inverness. This is the location used for Craig na Dun when filming Outlander and Season 4 filming has been spotted at the stones again.

Visit Scotland describes the stones as a prehistorical burial ground. It can be dated back by 4,000 years, used around 2,000BC when the cairns were built and then around 1,000BC to build the smaller monuments. There is also evidence of farming on the site before the monuments were placed!

The season three finale opened with Claire submerged in the water with a rope around her in dramatic scenes.

New Outlander film location ?

Outlander season four filming starts in Dunkeld

Outlander season 4 photo
Outlander season 4 film location in Dunkeld

Want to get the latest Outlander season 4 filming report? We’ve got some fresh information about filming in the Pertshire village of Dunkeld.

Outlander film news from Private Outlander tours

Information coming in via social media strongly suggests that Dunkeld will be the setting for at least the next day or two’s worth of production, if not longer. There are film trucks at the location and there have been some reports floating around out there for a while. It’s a little more unclear at present as to just how many major cast members will be there. (We never like to promise anyone just because we don’t want to create any undue expectations for a particular locale.)

What we can say about Dunkeld in general is that it’s a little bit further north in Scotland than where Outlander has been inclined to visit as of late. While the majority of this season has been filmed reasonably close to Glasgow, Dunkeld is located a good 70 miles or so away. Obviously the merit in traveling around is to showcase a wide range of geography, but beyond that it is also to capture some specific terrain for what is certainly the most difficult season of the series geographically to date. When you have to recreate a place like North Carolina, one of the challenges that comes along with that is that you need to be able to find ideal matches. That can be difficult and you do need to think outside of the box sometimes. This show, perhaps more so than almost any other out there, has to be incredibly creative. Most series have more established sets than they can revisit. While Outlander has that, they also film at length in what appears to be untapped terrain. You do have to make things appear as though they are centuries in the past!

What is important at present for Outlander is simply that the series continues to move things along as we get closer to the end of production this year. We’re charting towards an end date, for now, in the month of June. There’s still a whole lot more that needs to be done before we get to that point.

Hopefully, we’ll have another filming update to share within a day or so.
